The Olympics began on Friday night with the opening ceremony. Did you watch it? I thought it was very creatively done...a history of the Industrial Revolution. You could tell they spent A LOT of money putting that ceremony together. I didn't think it was as good as the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony 4 years ago, but it was still pretty impressive.
Watching the games on television creates several challenges. There's a 9 hour time delay between where we are and London. Because of that, a huge percentage of what we watch on NBC is on tape delay. If you want to see the events and watch them without knowing what happened, you basically have to avoid all outlets that might let the results out. This would include Twitter, Facebook, sports radio and tv, as well as inadvertent leaks from friends on the east coast. It's not an easy thing to do.
And so now, with the Olympics underway, the drama begins. To me, the games mean so much more than just trying to win gold medals. I love seeing the background pieces that NBC does on the athletes. This allows us to get a much closer look at them, and allows us to learn about their lives and why they are competing. It's much easier to root for someone to win if you know why they're there in London, and maybe who is inspiring them. I love that stuff!
