I'm a big believer of the phrase "paying it forward." I really think it does our soul good when we do something nice for someone else, especially when they least expect it.
The other day, I was at the doctor's office waiting to be called, and an elderly couple came through the door. They were struggling. He was using a walker and his wife was pushing herself along the floor with her feet while sitting in a wheelchair. I got up and asked her if I could help her, and I think she was shocked that someone would offer to do this. I wheeled her up to the front desk and she smiled and thanked me. It felt so good to do that.
I think all of us have chances everyday to help others. Sometimes we don't do it because we're busy, running late, or maybe even oblivious to others around us. But if you look, you can always find a way to help. Next time you see someone looking to break into a line of traffic, stop and wave them in. It only delays you a few seconds, but helps someone else out. Guys, practice some chivalry and hold the door open for a woman. In my experience, women love this, and you'll feel good doing it. My Mom always drummed it into my head..."Ladies first."
I know giving money to people on the side of the road asking for it is sometimes frowned upon. But I have empathy for these people. I'll almost always give them a dollar or two. Now I know some of them will not use the money wisely, but to me, if I can help someone who is really down on their luck, then it's worth that risk to me.
Look around, there are opportunities around everyday to help others. Keep your eyes open and you'll see them AND it will make you feel really good when you do it. Don't ever forget the Golden Rule...
"Do onto others as you would have them do onto you."
Wiser words have never been spoken, in my humble opinion.
