COFFEE ANYONE?

Coffee lovers are quite at home here in Washington. We are the birthplace of Starbucks after all and it seems like no matter where you wander around here, you're bound to find a place right around the corner to have a latte.

When I first moved here in the early 90s, I couldn't believe how many coffee shops there were. I'm from upstate NY and we drink coffee there, but in Washington we REALLY drink coffee. I was as far from a coffee aficionado as you could get when I arrived in Seattle. I was embarrassingly naive. Now, I'm a bit more knowledgeable. When I order my lattes, I'm not quite as intimidated as I used to be. But when I hear a 13 year old kid in Ballard saying, "I'd like a tall skim double-shot vanilla latte with whip please" it sets me back a little. This kid obviously knew his coffee ordering procedure much better than me!

Even though I'm a fan of good coffee, my "economical side" does bring me back to reality sometimes when it comes to buying a coffee beverage. Paying over $4 for a cup of coffee does seem excessive. But when you're craving caffeine, I guess it's a bargain.

I read today that Washington has more Starbucks per capita than any other state. We have .889 stores per every 10,000 people. There is however, one other area with more Starbucks per capita than Washington state. It's the OTHER Washington...D.C. They have 1.181 Starbucks stores for every 10,000. I guess they need to stay wide awake for those power broker sessions in DC.
