It's one of the biggest trades in Mariner history. Today, they traded Ichiro to the N.Y. Yankees for two minor league prospects...pitchers DJ Mitchell and Danny Farquhar.
Ichiro's batting average has slipped quite a bit over the last two years. In 2010, Ichiro averaged .315. Last year, he dropped to .272, and this year, he currently stands at .261...a career low. Obviously, there's a pattern there.
With Ichiro's contract expiring at the end of the season, the Mariners either had to re-sign him or consider a trade, and today, they made their decision. It's going to be strange not seeing Ichiro in a Mariner uniform. And the strangest part of all is the Yankees and Mariners begin a 3 games series tonight at Safeco Field. And tonight when the two teams suit up, Ichiro is expected to play...for the Yankees. Talk about weird!
Seattle fans are going to miss Ichiro. He's been the face of the franchise for over a decade. It's a shame he couldn't retire as a Mariner. That's the saddest part of the whole story.
