Oh no...not this. Believe it or not, you might be cutting back on bacon and other pork products in the not so distant future. The British National Pig Association (I'll bet you've never heard of them before) predicts a global shortage of pork next year because of shrinking pig herds. Why are they shrinking? Because of the drought we've had. Corn and soybean production, two major food sources for pigs, are way down because of the drought. So blame the lack of rain in the Midwest for that $15 Bacon cheeseburger next year.
It looks like it won't be as bad in the U.S. as it will be in Europe. Pork production next year is only going to be 1.3% lower in the U.S. compared to this year. But in Great Britain, pork losses could be as high as 10%, which would mean pork prices could double.
So the bottom line is...prepare for higher pork prices next year. But your pork tenderloin won't be as expensive here as it will be in London.
