Since our Pinterest page this week is featuring cars... Cars we know and love, dream cars we wish we knew... I thought I would take you briefly (thankfully) into my garage to have a quick look at my project car - which also happens to be something of a dream car.
One day, back when I was a little squirt on my bicycle, I saw our neighbor come down the street in a sweet new, white Studebaker Avanti. This was Stude's answer to the Corvette from Chevrolet in that it was fiberglass and fast. Thing is, Chevy had been making the Corvette for 10 years already and had all the body panel issues worked out. Studebaker was struggling financially and the trouble they had with the company they hired to make the body for the Avanti helped them along into oblivion.
So there were less than 5,000 Avanti's produced by Studebaker in the model years '63 and '64. This one was found in a barn in Snoqualmie, where my friend had been storing it for several years. One day I sent him an email asking if he still had it, and we came to terms shortly thereafter. I'd always wanted an original and this poor old neglected car needed more than I realized at the time.
After re-wiring the car and getting it running, I found the oil pressure was way too low. Time for a rebuild or transplant of the engine. Now, a previous owner had at some point replaced the Studebaker V8 with a Chevy V8, and since everything was set up for a small block engine, friends suggested I simply replace the old 305 engine with a 350. Thus, the empty engine bay for now.
Waiting in the wings is a relatively fresh 350 I bought from a guy in Lacey and as soon as I get a few more doo-dads I need, the plan is to drop this baby in and begin taking the "Purple Petrol Eater" to work!
Are you totally bored by all this talk? :-)
Sometimes my creativity for topics runs a little low, so please forgive the self-indulgence today.
I'll keep you updated on my progress from time to time.
