Last year about this time, Jannelle and I took a walking garden tour in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle and I was finally able to get a positive I.D. on a flower I had seen many times in many gardens. Either the owner wasn't there or didn't know what it was, until that day we were taking a self-guided tour and the home owner who was kind enough to let us traipse through her backyard knew what we were looking at. Finally I had my answer!
Came home, did a search and learned a lot about this Rodney Dangerfield of plants, that 'don't get no respect'. I went to my local nursery asking for lychnis (pronounced: LICK-niss) and the lady laughed and said; "Oh, that's a weed!"
Right away I KNEW I could grow it! Weeds love me and the deer eat what doesn't die from too much water, not enough water, soil that's not the right pH, neglect... and so on.
If this is a weed, I'm in Heaven! I have found Nirvana and it's not a CD.
Know what? They're doing just fine in my garden and I love them!
