Music to the Rescue!

An increasing body of evidence shows that music therapy can help improve symptoms associated with a wide variety of common health problems.  For example;

PAIN

One of the fastest growing areas of research relates to pain management.  In one study, patients who listened to recorded music for five to ten minutes before a medical procedure and during the procedure, had lower heart rates and were better able to tolerate the pain than non-listeners.  (Maybe that's why Warm 106.9 is the station of choice at dentist and doctor's offices in western Washington.)

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

It's commonly treated with diet, exercise and meds, but music therapy is another option.  A 2009 study reported that patients over age 50 with mild hypertension lowered their BP by 16 points systolic and nine points diastolic after a 12-week program of music therapy and BP medications.  Those who used the meds alone, reduced systolic pressure by four points and diastolic by three.

ANXIETY

A 2010 study in the journal Heart found that listening to relaxing music reduced feelings of anxiety in patients about to undergo heart surgery even more than an anti-anxiety medication.  Music therapy was found to help reduce patients' heart rates and their levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
