How Much Is That Doggie In the Window?

Quite a lot, when you consider not only Kirby’s pedigree (West Highland Terrier—or “Westie” for short) but also the cost of the back yard fence to contain him.

The interview with Kirby went something like this.

“So, Kirby, What do you think of this fence?”

“Well, I sure do have a nice backyard to run around in. But late one afternoon, I figured out how to get myself through the fence when I spied a squirrel in the trees on the other side. My ‘mom’ got quite worried and upset, especially when I wouldn’t come when she called me. She asked the next door neighbors to put their dogs outside, knowing I would want to play with them.”

“And did you?”

“Of course. And, then she brought me in the house. I had to be on a tether for a few days every time I went outside until she could come up with another idea. Darn, those computers. . .she found this dog collar on line and ordered one. Well, at least it’s in the colors of my ‘dad’s’ Navy fatigues, so it sort of works. But, really, what self-respecting dog wears something like this”!

“Are you getting used to it?”

“Yeah, what else can I do? At least I can run and play outside with my doggie friends and my ‘little bro’—that’s him in the picture with my ‘mom’ and me. I’m 1 ½ years older than he is, so I’m the BIG ‘brother.' I can’t wait until he is big enough to throw the ball to me so I can fetch it. Maybe then I will be too exhausted to want to run out of the yard for squirrels.”
