Getting Your Car Ready For the Cold Weather Ahead

My insurance company (Pemco) sent me a checklist to prep the cars for winter and I thought I'd share this list with you:

Check your antifreeze - And I would suggest having the cooling system flushed and replace the antifreeze (50/50 mix) if it's been a couple of years.

Get your battery tested - If it's more than 3 years old

Lubricate door and trunk locks - To keep them from freezing

Change your oil

Replace wiper blades

Put an ice scraper in the car - You don't want to be hunting for this when it's cold and miserable.

Consider switching to snow tires

Always fuel up when the tank is 1/2 full - That way you won't run out of gas if you're caught in traffic during a slow, snowy commute.

Don't reduce your tire pressure - It won't help on snow and ice.

Carry an emergency kit - Gloves, blanket, warm clothes, nonperishable food, water, sand or kitty litter, flashlight, tire chains and jumper cables.
