Think of the companies that use jingles to sell their products. Locally, Sleep Country comes to my mind first. Everyone I know can sing it and that's the whole point, really. I bet you can remember old ads that used melodies and jingles! Remember "plop-plop-fizz-fizz, oh what a relief it is"?
Radio stations like ours that play music have used jingles for many years and for the same reason. My long-time friend and former Program Director, Mike Neff, has been an avid collector of radio station jingles over the years. In fact, he started a tradition sending friends "jingle sampler" tapes around Christmas time that would include both the latest and classic jingles.
Mike writes: "Until recently, I was unaware of the existence of a website dedicated to the preservation of Radio Station Jingle Samplers.
I was very flattered and honored to learn the Jingle Samplers I produced in the late 70s and early 80s are featured in a special section of the website. Corny and "dated" as they WERE ...they're THERE!"
Now, I know not everyone is like Mike and me (thankfully!) but just in case you want a special audio treat you don't hear every day, you just might recognize one or two of these from another place and time. I love these and gratefully thank Mike for preserving a piece of Americana!
