The UK must like its coffee strong.
Starbucks is now making drinks served in the UK stronger than elsewhere in the world — two shots of espresso instead of one in lattes and other beverages.
The Telegraph reports the change is due to a 60 percent spike in UK orders that add an extra shot of espresso.
“Customers are becoming more experienced, more sophisticated and many more are looking for a stronger taste,” Kris Engskov, Starbucks managing director in the UK and Ireland, told the Telegraph. “This is a big move and a big investment. The UK is the most competitive coffee market, more so even than the States.”
The 60 percent spike accounted for 200,000 extra shots every week in the UK.
The new recipe took a reformulating of Starbucks traditional espresso-drink recipes, including a new technique that makes the steamed link more “velvety.” The price of Starbucks beverages in the UK are not expected to change.
