I am a sucker for water creatures, as is my family.
The Seattle Aquarium has had this amazing program called "Winter Fishtival" and boy, has it been an adventure. Today is the final day, and I wanted to learn all about the locals to our waters. Today's special creature is the Sculpin. What's a Sculpin, you ask? Well, the Grunt Sculpin is an awkward swimmer, grunt sculpin crawl along on the tips of their finger-like pectoral fins with short twitchy hops, jerks, and jumps! We watched divers frolic in the "Window on Washington Waters" this morning, and honestly I wanted to dive in too. :) Here's an interesting handout about the presentation we enjoyed.

And I'm planning ahead for the upcoming "Hawaii in Your Own Backyard" this month. I'm going to put on my slippers and shaka shirt and remember my birthplace, while exploring unique sea life that originates only in the Hawaiian islands. I even caught a quick shot or Hawaii's state fish this morning - the adorable Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. Pronounced hoo-moo-hoo-moo-noo-koo-noo-koo-ah-poo-ah-ah ;) Say that 3 times fast! or just say Reef Triggerfish, haha. The name in Hawaiian means "fish that grunts like a pig" as it makes noise when you catch it. And of course, it is illegal to catch them as they are the treasured state fish.Sorry so blurry, he was FAST.
