Canadians soon won't have a penny in their pockets
Canadians are dumping the entire denomination. A total 35 billion pennies are in circulation north of the border, with each new cent costing 1.6 cents to produce. As the coin is officially phased out, Canadians will be dutifully hauling in around 181 million pounds of the near worthless coins to banks and businesses, who will pass them on to the Canadian Mint for recycling. To commemorate the defunct coin, 16,000 one-cent pieces will be enshrined in a mural at Canada's Currency Museum. Read the entire story here.
