All we need is your name on the CONTEST page (takes 90 seconds to enter). After you win the NW Spa Weekend you’re in the running for the trip to Maui. Here I share notes of Maui, I was just there.
Airport is right in Downtown area. Rental cars are good in getting to resort but most of the time you will pay for the car to sit in parking lot. Costco is the first thing you see when leaving airport. Everyone loads up for the week here (best prices). “ABC” Stores (like a 7-11 but much more loaded) are the best for everything and cheap prices. Surf fishing is best along highway /shoreline on road to Kaanapali. Lahaina is cool for fun eats, happy hours like Cheese Burger In Paradise, Bubba Gump Shrimp and others on main strip. Parking there? Get off the busy waterfront and a block or two from the water there are two lots “free”.
Snorkel Trips? Big boats hold 140 people and crowded. Just head to Marina at Lahaina and find the two outfits with the 35 foot Zodiac inflatables. These are fast in getting to the best areas for seeing fish and reefs. The ride is like being with the crew of the Calypso! One crew has a woman (Jennifer Aniston double, really she was in a movie with her) Take the west suit too when offered by them for extra comfort and wind barrier.
Driving fun? Road to Hana a must! Find the Bamboo forest (see the map in car glove box as there are no signs to watch for) Also drive to the top of Haleakala Volcano. My car ran out of gas in parking lot and I coasted the car all 20 miles down to finally find fuel.
Sharks/Sea Turtles…..Attack of shark is almost nothing there. If you do see one it is best to stare in its eyes….they will move away. Sea Turtles are huge (coffee table size)! And come close to shore mornings and evenings. They will come within inches. Illegal to touch but if you grab accidently they will pull you right along. They don’t bite.
Best advice? Get out and explore Maui! Do your beach time mid morning and late afternoon. Midday’s on the beach in sun are “a fast burn”.
Note: Apply tanning lotion or sun block an hour before you play in water and let it dry. Lotion applied just before water entry or while in the water over the years is the reason some Reefs are lifeless. The ingredients of many lotions contaminated the Coral.
Conch Shell is blown at Sunset, 5 seconds in each direction. Face sun (west) turn right to North, then again to East, then again to South.
There is a new Over Hawaii DVD on market by PBS, have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=iLQR-r9t6dg
