@RealHughJackman: Filming for les miserables has finished!!! Thank you Tom and the whole crew! Amazing. 24601 signing out!
The full length movie musical was first developed in the late 1980's after the original theatre production premiered in 1985. In 1998, the same year as I saw Les Mis in Toronto, a non-musical version came to the big screen with a super cast including Liam Neeson as Valjean, Geoffrey Rush as Javert, Uma Thurman, and Claire Danes. Now over 20 years later, another epic sung-through musical film is in post-production:
Besides Hugh Jackman who plays Valjean, the new Les Misérables that's set to arrive on December 14th stars Russell Crowe as Javert, Anne Hathaway (who sings in the trailer) as Fantine, and Sasha Baron Cohen and Helen Bonham Carter as the Thénardiers.
Back in 1998 at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, I saw Colm Wilkinson reprise his role as Jean Valjean for the first time since his departure from the Broadway production in 1987! Here he is at 66 years of age leading the original 1985 cast in "One Day More" at the 25th Anniversary performance I saw on KCTS9 earlier today:
