I was four years old; my little fingers poised over the play buttons of two cassette tape players, with Elvis on the left, Beatles on the right and a little microphone on a stand in the middle. My brother had built a small radio transmitter and put me on the air while he listened. Somewhere we have that recording of me on the air for the first time, if I happen to find it, I *might* post it.
Years later, we would laugh that it is so funny that I wound up being a D.J. when my brother was the one who was (and still is) so interested in radio(s). He is constantly building or modifying some toy, I mean radio…
The microphone in this photo, and the one in my profile picture is one of my most prized possessions. It belonged to Scott’s grandfather when he played in a band in the mid 40’s, and was given to me many years ago.
Often referred to as “the Fat Boy Elvis style” microphone, it is a Shure 55C. For further geeking out, here is the spec sheet from 1942.
