Most people that use lipstick probably don't want to hear that there is lead in their favorite brand. Even if it is a trace and not considered harmful by the FDA.
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics disagrees with the findings of the FDA, and wants to set limits for lead levels in lipstick.
Lead is not added to lipstick, per se, but is found in the mineral based color additives, containing trace levels found in the soil, water and air.

The top brands with elevated levels of lead include L'Oreal and Maybelline, Cover Girl, Nars and Stargazer.
And if you want the brand with the lowest level (and possibly the lowest cost too) the least contaminated brand, according to this study, is Wet & Wild Mega Mixers Lip Balm.
